Welcome to the campaign!

In order to manage our expectations from the game, I wanted to first explain the main themes and playstyle of this game. Keep it in mind when reading through the site, and when designing characters.

    # High adventure and daring deeds! Fortune favors the brave! The campaign draws inspiration from various sources, (There is a list below if you're interested)., hich mostly feature the protagonist as active, daring people, living dangerous lives, taking great risks, with quick paced action, shenanigans, and wild doings. Though plans and cunning have their place, "playing it safe", "covering all bases" or "making a careful detailed plan" isn't... When is doubt- go for the long shot, and the most interesting options! Not for the safest ones... Feel free to dare! At least the trouble you'll get into will be interesting...

    # "The price of freedom". This is a common phrase on the Witchling Isles. The Islanders history started after a long and costly struggles against strange powerful entities known only as "The Masters", who enslaved them for an unknown time. They sacrificed a lot to be free, and intend to keep it this way! To this day, the highest ideal on the isles is that of freedom, and this features highly in their culture. But "freedom" has a deeper meaning for this game- it is about the freedom "In world", but also of the gaming table. The adventures aren't scripted, and a lot depends on the players initiative, and way of approaching problems, opportunities and conflicts. You can travel many places, choose which leads to find, whom to battle, and whom to run away from, and more. This means you will need to be proactive, and that I'll need to be more open about various approaches. One last thing- Note that the phrase also talks about "the price". Although freedom is ecnoruaged, it does not mean there aren't consequences to your choices... Otherwise what fun would it be? Take the good with the bad as they say.

    # A clash of cultures: The Witchling Isles host a tremendous variety of native races, people and cultures. This variety causes conflict, disputes, and more. But more than that- a major foreign force known as "The Empire", composed of humans and their type of dwarves, have reached and settled in the isles, and came into conflict with the natives. The human empire has a very different culture, ships, values and even their magic works differently! Also, not long ago two more foreign forces emereged in the isles- The industrious machine like Vezikian, and the cat like Sebiccai.

This clash of cultures is a major theme and force in the campaign. It also has game mechanics effects, the major one being a limitation on races, class edges and equipment, by different cultures. See the "player options" site section for more info.

    # "Far and wise is the sea! My mates and my ship are my family..." A major part of the campaign will feature maritime travel, hazards, ship and crew management, and battles. This too has a specific section on the site, but more than that- it is a major theme. Whether you are just a traveler, a merchant, an opportunist, a pirate, a privateer in the employ of The Empire, or anything else- You will spend A LOT of time on the ship, and with your fellow crew mates. So practice your boating skills, rehearse your sea chanties, check the navigation map and bring the rum! It's going to be a long voyage.

    # Witches, witches everywhere! The islanders magic tradition draws heavily from witch folklore. Practically all power users, be they druids, sorcerers, bards, actual witches and more are considered "witches" by the general populace. Expect a heavy emphasis on curses, bartering, community magic, dealing with spirits, voodoo and the like. The isalders respect the witches highly, but also fear them. You never want to cross an angry witch!

For those interested- Major sources of inspiration:

    # the excellent 6 Elements Campaign (http://www.thirteen10.com/the6elements/introduction/#search) Mostly the map and some of the history. (Link no longer working unfortunately)

    # The fantastic scifi Firefly series. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-sp68GjYL0 ).Mostly the concept of a group of misfits traveling on a (space) ship, between opportunistic work, some piracy, but also dealing with major issues of the world, and themselves...

    # Pirates of the Caribbean of course! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZaLZO61-gY)

    # The oldy, but goody computer game- Star Control 2! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHjIJzoi8zc). Exploration, upgrading your ship, interacting with strange races, and possibly- saving the galaxy?
